Ink, Skin & Focus: Candid Moments from Cornwall Tattoo Convention 2026

The Cornwall Tattoo Convention returned to the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge this year, turning the space into a living, breathing gallery of skin, skill and stories. I walked the aisles with my camera, looking for the unscripted moments — the concentrated brow of an artist, the quiet trust between client and tattooer, the way light catches wet ink and pink gloves under the bright convention lights.

This frame is one of those moments. A heavily tattooed artist leans in, machine in hand, completely absorbed. The client’s arm rests on the plastic-wrapped armrest, already a canvas of existing work. Bright pink gloves, the plastic wrap on the machine, the floral blur in the foreground — all of it adds to the sensory intensity of the room. These are the details I look for: the small, human gestures that turn a busy convention floor into something intimate.

I shoot these events because I love the honesty of the process. There’s no posing when someone is mid-tattoo. The focus is absolute. As a photographer I’m drawn to that intensity — the same intensity I try to bring to every assignment, whether it’s documentary work, portraiture or live events.
