On a crisp April morning in 2022, I captured this moment of quiet magic while walking across the rugged landscape of St Breward on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall.
A lone, windswept tree stands resilient against the vast moorland, its branches reaching out as the first light of sunrise bathes the scene in warm golden hues. Below, a gentle sea of mist rolls through the valley, softening the distant hills and creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. Scattered sheep graze peacefully among the ancient rocks and vibrant green moss, adding a touch of life to this timeless, windswept wilderness.
This image was entered into GuruShots’ Photographer of the Year competition and was selected for a digital showcase at the Coningsby Gallery in London in December 2023 — an unexpected and wonderful honour for a single frame taken on a quiet moorland stroll.
Bodmin Moor never fails to surprise with its raw beauty and shifting moods. Some mornings, the mist transforms the familiar into something otherworldly, reminding us just how powerful a simple landscape can feel when the light is just right.
